What is a NIF and why do I need one?

A NIF (Numero de Identificacion Fiscal) is a Spanish tax identification number. Any company selling products in Spain, whether from the EU or outside, needs a NIF to register for EPR compliance, file taxes, or interact with Spanish authorities. What type of NIF will I receive?

We provide an N98 NIF (also known as NIF-N). This is the standard tax ID issued to foreign entities that have tax obligations in Spain but no permanent establishment there. It is exactly what you need for EPR compliance and registering with Spanish PROs. Note that an N98 NIF is not used for filing Spanish VAT (IVA) returns, holding shares in a Spanish SL, or applying for an AEAT-issued NIF certificate. Does my company need a NIF?

If your company is based outside Spain and you want to do business there (sell products, register for EPR, open a bank account, hire staff, or handle any tax-related transactions), you need a NIF. Note that your company needs a NIF, not a personal NIE; the difference between an NIE and a NIF explains why. One exception: if you are already registered in the EU One-Stop-Shop (OSS) system, you may already have a NIF assigned automatically. Check with your local OSS authority before ordering to avoid duplicates.

Is the NIF permanent?

Yes. Once assigned, your NIF number is permanent. There are no renewals or recurring fees for the NIF itself.
